McFadden Wins Australian Sprintcar Open
Author : Archerfield Speedway

James McFadden has swept both nights of the World Series Sprintcars Australian Sprintcar Open - presented by Performance Wholesale - at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway, the hugely popular young driver adding the fifty lap, $20,000 to win event to his list of accomplishments with a polished drive to victory ahead of World Of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz and Robbie Farr in front of a very large and appreciative crowd on Saturday night January 5.

McFadden, who also won the Friday night Preliminary Feature, once again showed maturity beyond his years to hold off a number of challenges from Schatz in lapped traffic to deny the American a fifth Open title. The race itself was one for the ages, running forty-five laps without incident after an early yellow for Brooke Tatnell on lap five and a red on the subsequent restart for Shaun Bradford who rolled gently in turn four but was able to take his place at the back of the field.

With multiple racing lines that allowed the leaders to pass the tail enders high, low or even through the middle on occasion, McFadden simply outpaced his rivals with raw speed and then maintained the advantage with some very clever use of the lapped cars to hold firstly pole-sitter Tim Kaeding and then Schatz at bay. Kaeding would eventually finish fourth with David Murcott fifth after recovering from an early spin.

Kudos to the track curator and in turn to every driver in the field for putting on what will be remembered for some time as an outstanding race. While Schatz's fifty lap mark set in 2009 will remain in the books for at least another year - most likely for all time given the performance he turned in that year - the opportunity to witness a full field of Sprintcars run the final forty-five laps non-stop as they did doesn't come around too often. Congratulations to all.

Racing continues at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway Tuesday night January 8 with the $10,000 to win Capalaba Wreckers Sprintcar Cup and Midgets on the programme before the Summer Of Speed closes out with three massive nights of racing on Thursday/Friday/Saturday for the 51st running of the Supercheap Auto Australian Sprintcar Championship.
