Scheuerle Opens His Post-Christmas Account With A Victory
Author : Archerfield Speedway
Andrew Scheuerle opened his post-Christmas racing account in the best possible manner with victory over fellow KRE Race Engines Sprintcar Track Championship contender Todd Wanless and Tim Garrett in the sixth Round of the Series at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane on Boxing Night. It was Scheuerle's third win of the 2012/13 Championship and fourth in Qld this season.
Scheuerle's victory came at the expense of three drivers who led the race ahead of him at some point. Firstly, Jack Dover from the United States looked to be on his way to winning on debut at the track until he brushed the front straight wall and allowed David Muir past for the lead just before a third of the distance was in the books. Dover would eventually retire from the event five laps later while running fourth.
On a race track that had been hit with overnight and early morning rain, Muir was out in front and wrestling with the #36 while holding off the challenges of Darren Jensen who had made his way to second from his third row starting position. Jensen led laps 24-26 after stealing the lead from Muir as they raced their way through lapped traffic only for Muir to regain the lead with eight laps remaining. However contact between the two leaders entering turn three ended both their chances of victory, Jensen in particular with a lot of work ahead of him before Saturday's race with the #75 sustaining considerable chassis damage after slamming the turn three wall and coming to a rest alongside Muir's car.
Scheuerle, third at the time of the incident, picked up the pieces and raced his way to the chequers - and a valuable points haul towards the Championship - ahead of Wanless, Tim Garrett, Danny Reidy and Donny Schatz in fifth position.
In other Boxing Night results, Nathan Durston won the AMCA Nationals Feature ahead of Steve Potts and Russ Hardy while Anthony Chaffey won the Modlites Feature from Ashley Jarvis and Michael Kendall. David Whell won the Lightning Sprints Feature with Wayne Iacono and Sean Hill second and third respectively.
Sprintcar racing continues at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night December 29 with World Of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz and Jack Dover from the USA chasing a win for Uncle Sam in the second of the Sprintcar Internationals at the track this Summer.
