Your K R E Round 14 Winner - Garry Brazier
Author : Archerfield Speedway

By his own admission, he wasn't that good in the early Heat races but come Feature time nobody was going to stand in the way of a Garry Brazier victory at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night May 26, the six-time Australian Champion riding his luck of a second row start after Dash winner Todd Wanless elected to invert the top fourteen to race his way to the chequers ahead of Andrew Scheuerle and Bryan Mann in Round 14 of the KRE Race Engines Sprintcar Track Championship.

Brazier has won a lot of races at Archerfield through the years, and to be fair he has felt the pain of losing some as well, and there were glimpses of "The Braz" of old when he got to the lead and had the sniff of a win. The determination that was needed to get the victory was on show, especially when Scheuerle pulled a monster slider on him for the lead in turns one and two following a mid-race restart. You could almost see the smile on his face when he drove back under Scheuerle and regained the lead as they raced down the back straight and you get the feeling both enjoyed the punch and counter-punch as they raced each other for the win.

Credit to Wanless for the brave decision following his Dash win to take up the Kratzmann Caravans challenge and invert the top fourteen in the Feature, throwing caution to the wind and making a race of it for the big crowd on hand. Many questioned why given the indifferent season he has had by his own standards and considering how good he was looking in the #67 Supercheap Auto J&J as a guest driver for the Paul Morris team.

Wanless had worked his way to ninth in the opening two laps, seventh by lap six, was fifth on lap seven and fourth by lap twelve and right in contention, as were Scheuerle and David Muir who started a row in front of him and now sat second and third behind Brazier. Wanless' race however ended in turn four on lap twenty when contact between he and Jason Kendrick, who ironically was driving the #2 Wanless normally steers, got him turned around and in the path of Darren Jensen who was left with nowhere to go but into the stranded #67.

In hindsight the easier option was for Wanless to refuse the challenge and start off the front in the Feature, for the fans though the decision to invert the fourteen made it into a great race.

While Brazier picked up the lion's share of the prize money for his win, there will be little change in the KRE Championship standings with Scheuerle, Mann and Muir finishing two through four. That result ensures the Championship will go down to the final Round, scheduled to be held at Archerfield on June 16.

In other results on the night, Wayne Brims led home Darren Kane and Steve Pearce in the final of the Super Sedan Track Championship with Steve Jordan and Wayne Randall completing the top five. Russ Hardy won the AMCA Nationals Feature from Rene Franken and Matt Hardy, Tim Smith won the final of the ASCF Junior Sedan Track Championship from James Kennedy and Jayden Peacock while Ben Grice scored a come from behind win over Ashley Jarvis and Scott Lehfeldt in the Modlites Feature.
