Hassell Wins Polar Ice Feature, Palmer Extends Series Lead
Author : Archerfield Speedway
Jeremy Hassell held off a determined Michael Kendall over the final few laps to register his first Feature race win of the season at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night April 7, the former Qld Champion winning the start and leading every one of the twenty five laps to also record his first Polar Ice Qld Midget Car Series victory.
Kendall, the winner two weeks previously, threw everything at Hassell in the late stages of the race but came up short in his bid to win back-back Features. Third home was Brendan Palmer, whose podium finish will see him extend his lead in the Series point score and it could almost be enough to see him clinch the 2011/12 Title.
Series contenders Grant Draney and Brock Dean had mixed nights, Draney failing to finish the Feature after an incident on lap seven that also involved Troy Ware and Rob Stewart while Dean salvaged a fourth place finish after qualifying seventh. Matt Greenwood completed the top five ahead of Mark George, Michael Harders, Todd Wanless, Darren Vine and Sid Whittaker in tenth.
The next Round of the Polar Ice Series will be held at Archerfield on April 28 with the final Midget race of the season, the Auto Upgrade Midget Fifty Lapper, to be held on May 19.
In other results at Archerfield, Andrew Robinson won the AMCA Nationals Feature with Matt Hardy and Shane Newstead filling the minors, Patrick Brennan won the ASCF Junior Sedans Feature ahead of Will Muir and Jayden Gill while Michael Pronger outpaced Charlie Brown for the win in the fifteen lap Formula 500 Feature with Dale Shilleto third.
Racing continues next Saturday night April 21 with the Qld Sprintcar Championship, featuring World Series Sprintcar Champion James McFadden, plus Late Models, Compact Speedcars, Modlites and support class racing on the programme.
