It was a welcome return to the top step of the podium for Michael Kendall at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night March 31, the five-time New Zealand Midget Champion who now calls Qld home running out the winner of Round 7 of the Polar Ice Qld Midget Car Series.
The victory was Kendall's first in a Midget at Archerfield since November 2010 and he finished just over a second clear of Brock Dean with Brendan Palmer, Grant Draney and Jeremy Hassell completing the top five.
Series leader Brendan Palmer opened the night with Fast Time from the group qualifying sessions, his 13.718s lap quick enough to edge out Brock Dean, Grant Draney, Todd Wanless and Jeremy Hassell. These five were the only drivers to dip into the 13s bracket ahead of Kendall who was next best with a 14.297s run.
Heat race wins went to Kendall, Michael Harders, Wanless and Dean, with Dean also topping the qualifying points chart. Grant Draney won the Dash to secure pole for the twenty lap Feature with Dean home second ahead of Palmer, Kendall and Hassell while Wanless failed to complete the six lap distance.
In the Crossley Racing Engines V8 Dirt Modified Series, Peter Britten showed his class to set Fast Time at the start of the night, qualify for the Dash and go on to win the twenty-five lap Feature event and in doing so, become the first repeat Dirt Modified Feature winner at Archerfield this season.
Britten, easily the most travelled driver in the country the past few years after racing in events around Australia and the United States, is also one of the most successful with three Australian Championships to his credit. Despite his extensive schedule which has limited his appearance at Archerfield on occasions, Britten has now won five of the past thirteen Dirt Modified races in Brisbane, including one of his National Titles.
Second to Britten was Kelvin Hamilton who has been enjoying a turnaround of fortunes of late and who placed himself in contention for the Feature win after finishing second in the Dash to Keith Muller. Hamilton led the majority of the race until Britten got by with four to go and then held out David Clarke for the runner-up spot to secure his second podium finish of the season in Brisbane. Fourth was Muller, fifth Gary Wathen with current Australian Champion Mark Robinson sixth ahead of Mick Sauer, Scott Foy, Matthew Ingrey and Paul Brooker in tenth.
Racing continues at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway next Saturday night April with a special Easter show featuring the Tri-City Sprintcar Shootout, presented by East Coast Logistics, Wingless Sprints and support class racing on the programme plus a huge Fireworks show for the kids.
